Hālau Name
•        Hālau – is translated as “school.”  It literally means hā (to breathe or
spirit of the mouth) and lau (leaf).  Together hālau means “continued growth”
(symbolized by the leaf) through the breath via teaching.
•        Ha’a – means low or close to the ground or dance with the knees bent.
Ha’aha’a means to be humble.
•        Kea – This is
Kumu Paul’s family name.  All three of his hālau are named
after family members.
•        Kinohi - Kinohi is Kumu Paul's son.  The hālau is named in his honor.

Colors
•        Red is the color for the stewards of the culture.
•        Black encompasses all colors, just like the hālau welcomes all who wish
to join us and learn.
•        White is for the purity of our heart and intentions as we embark on this
experience with one another.

Logo
The shark skin cover of the pahu drum incorporates the outline Mount St.
Helena which stands above Calistoga.  The drum rests on the tin roof of Kumu
Paul's home in Keaukaha-Hilo, HI which is the foundation of all of our schools
and the home to Kumu's first hālau,
Hālau Ha'a Kea o Akalā.

There are 2 other hālau that carry the Kea family name.
